Hi there, I'm Ava

I'm a project manager, a parent, and an expat based in Toronto, Canada.

A few years ago, I moved here with my family. What started as a temporary contract gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.

How It Started

Moving to Canada wasn’t part of the long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it began as a work opportunity and quickly grew into something far more significant.

The initial months were demanding — unfamiliar systems, routines, and expectations. Day-to-day chores seemed more complex than expected.

The Adjustment Period

Culture shock, doubt, and learning on the fly were present. Gradually routines took shape. We found spots that suited us, connected with other families, and began creating something that felt steady.

Why I Built Velvet Garden Horizon

Much of the information online either targeted corporate relocation guidance or shallow tourism content. What was missing was a frank, everyday family viewpoint.

This site aims to fill that void by offering practical advice drawn from real-life experiences in Canada.

What This Site Does (And Does Not)

This site is:

  • Hands-on insights from living in Canada
  • Centered on family life and everyday realities
  • Updated whenever a real change occurs

This site isn't:

  • Not a tourism authority resource
  • Not a sponsored review platform
  • Not a generic travel blog

Looking Ahead

Our time in Canada goes on, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep documenting what we uncover.

If you have questions about family life in Toronto or anywhere in Canada, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best regards,

Ava
